The Ohio Players Fire 1974 Live

Here's the thing, I'm fifteen in 1975 hormones raging like a motherfunker!! and looking for some direction, some where to purge my angsted!! after all this is prepunk, hippydippy wasn't doing it for me, neither was the heavy metal side of things (both current influences at the local Youth club) I was liking some Bowie but it wasn't enough ,there was some thing missing in music for me you know deep inside it just wasn't fulfilling!! I wasn't how can I put it,GETTING MY GROOVE ON!!! and then I buddied up with a local youth at my school, slightly older then me who must have took pity on this listless, callow(spotty)individual and decided to become my personal musicYoda for awhile, just enough to set me up on a righteous path (musical that is!) his name was Kamajit Gill, yes thats right,an Indian Funk Master!! who one day invited me back to his parents house to peruse his record collection and what a collection it was, I can still see it now, stacked against a wall, many shiny, bright lurid even envelopes containing the black(literally)gold, I wasn't allowed to touch oh no,they were especially  selected for me to start my education in the groove(I remember spotting a Funkadelic cover one time, and Kamajit explaining that I wasn't quite ready yet to experiance the heavy sounds contained within!). So what was included in that first selection for my consideration? .......
The "Mighty Mighty" Earth,Wind&Fire!

The "Fever"ish Ronnie Laws!

And lastly the band that has had one of the most long term influances on me,from then to now, they are still part of my listening pleasure from the heavy, heavy rocking funk of "Fire" to the jawdropping drumtastic beat  of "I Want to Be Free"!! from day one I wanted to drum like James "Diamond" Williams, what he can do with a bass drum,he doesn't follow the beat he creates it !to me he was the John Bonham of funk drummers!(Iknow ,Iknow it's a big statement to make but thats my humble opinion, just listen to Rollercoaster or Honey, that bassdrum just flows!!!)the falsetto vocals of the band couterpointing the deep earthy growls of "Sugerfoot"Bonner not to mention his scat vocals and bluesy guitar playing(check out"Far East Mississippi"on the vastly underated "Contradiction"album)from the gatefold sleeves with their "controversial" covers to the "Player"pics of the band members all afro's,medallions and crushed velvet! their multipal instrument playing lists and also their starsigns, I loved their starsigns included with little graphic icons at the time I knew  them  all by heart!!!!and just a small point but to me hughly significant that they were a true "band of brothers" for the Mercury albums at least, all the song selections were all ways listed as "written by the Ohio Players" equal royalities split and recognising each members input to the music(includin the mighty horn section!!!)To me a top band and to this youth from a housing estate in the the midlands, an exotic colurful outlet to a larger world outwith the industrial north and the incentive to to get out their and explore!!!! So to close heres a youtube(I love youtube!!)clip showing the "Players" in full flow!note the(german?)audiance don't seem to be getting their mojo's workin' but the band aren't caring they are ready to partey!!!!

The heavy duty band of brothers Ohio Players!!!!!
