Ivy in London.

Fantastic article about the origins of the Ivy/Modernist look. Although the story of how the Ivy League style fared in the British capital is inextricably bound with that of the early 60s Modernists it’s also to do with that British preference for some cultivated eccentricity......The rest of the article his here
The Cover Art of Roy Ayers

Mods in the Midlands

How the writer from Nottingham Alan Fletcher, author of the wonderful Mod Crop Trilogy of books, placed some stories from his youth into the film version of The Who's 'Quadrophenia',

Ritmo No.1

Hey!Groovy,Groovy people, here's some world jazz jive to get your funk feet into, now go forth and give it some!!!!!!

For your exploration, anticipation and participation some of the following:...............................
Blood,Sweat&Tears,The Ebony Rhythm Band,
LA Carnival,Charles Wright,and Jo Stance,
Gerardo Frisina,Frootfal,Cal Tjader,Jukka Eskola,
Son's & Daughters of Lite,Coati Mundi,Ben Mono,
Quantic Soul Orchestra,Chocolate Milk,Heatwave,Sun,
The Equals and Ramsey Lewis,to name a few!!!!!!!!!!!
enjoy!!!.....
memories of buying the albums by Heatwave and Sun,there was a special record stall that I used to frequent in my then hometown of Nottingham, it was in the Victoria Center shopping mall which had its own 'Victoria market' consisting of various stalls selling everything from fabrics, household goods, to the good old pea's & mint sauce, mussels and the famous sausage and tomato Bap!(not roll!)up the escalator on the second level!where the caff would have a large tray of the sausage and tomato mixture cooking in the oven all morning!!! also not forgetting Jamaican patties!! very often a lunch time staple(not including the occasional pie, chips, beans and gravy!!!) any way the stall was situated just near the exit to the main part of the center and was always an essential stop in my lunch time break, especially after reading the newest copy of Blues and Soul to check out any top albums that were released ,
many happy purchases included Cameo,Mandrill,
The Commodores,Slave,The Barkays, and Earth,Wind &Fire to name a few, and what I loved about the place the most was the smell of the brand new vinyl as you explored the ( gate fold if it was the American label)sleeve and read all the available info, star signs, instruments played, and band members names, of the very often mysterious and exotic sounds(to these ears)recorded within, many happy days were had playing the platters on my cheap plastic record player, where I would lie on my bedroom floor with the speakers carefully positioned on each side of my head so I could absorb the layers of funk sounds held within the Vinyl grooves!!!!! Fantastico!!

FONCE MIZELL: RIP

Fonce Mizell HELL UP IN HARLEM.jpg

Fonce Mizell passed away yesterday. He was one-half of one of the distinctive and beloved production duos of the 1970s (and via sampling, of the 1990s, you might say).

An Interview with Steve Marriott-1965

' One of the unsung heroes of the post-British Invasion era. Steve Marriot was part of Small Faces when this interview was conducted. 1965 saw the band just getting getting a name for themselves, breaking out of the Mod mold and striking out for new territory. They had several minor hits, but nothing that would compare to their successes just two years later. Marriott would eventually part company with his Small Faces bandmates, who would go off and morph into Faces and recruit Rod Stewart. Marriott would form the iconic Hard Rock outfit Humble Pie, a band that also featured ex-Herd member Peter Frampton. Humble Pie became huge all over the world, selling out stadiums and racking up an impressive number of hit albums in the process.'
'Sadly, Marriott left us rather early. He died tragically in

1991, but he left behind a long and celebrated body of

work that became very influential in the growth and

development of so many bands who came after him.

Here is an interview done with Brian Matthews of the BBC
as part of their Pop Profiles Series. An interview that
hasn't been heard in a long time with an artist whose
work was pivotal during so many evolutions of Rock',
Gordon Skene.

Thanks to the Newstalgia.crooksandliars.com site for this

fantastic interview the link is HERE

The Peddlers - Walk on the Wild Side

Here's a YouTube clip of one of my favourite bands The Peddlers, founded in Manchester in1964 the trio consisted of drummer Trevor Morais (check out the clip to see this man lay down a groove!) bassist Tab Martin the only guy I've seen who makes playing the bass look cool sitting down! and underpins their jazz/loungecore sound and then the icing on the cake, the deep earthy vocals and funkfilled keyboard skills of Roy Phillips like a cross between Ray Charles and Georgie Fame he completes this ensembles massive sound! Although they were well recieved by those in the 'know' and had various residency's in London such as the Scotch of St.James Club and even recorded their first album 'Live At The Pickwick' at one such venue, they never reached the dizzy heights that they should have and after various albums released between 1967 and 1972 ( which have been used by beatdiggers and samplers everywhere, they finally called it a day.
